Mago Project Description and Work
Background :
Mago area poses valuable natural resources, such as Lake Victoria and river Yala which are exposed to pollution threats. Climate changes effects are also experienced of late, such as unusual dry seasons, changes in weather patterns (unexpected late or early heavy rains).
Present in the community are wildlife, such as hippos and crocodiles which have not been allocated to any Game reserve or National parks.
Charcoal burning, poor farming, over fishing and deposal of human wastes are some of the activities that have contributed to the nature and climate changes in the area, this were done due to poverty that community member are living in to. This project is aim to rice the income revenues of the people in future this will also increase CO² consumption.
Volunteers and Workcamp duration
The camp will be composed of 25 international and local volunteers and will run for duration of 3 weeks. The work-camp will be managed by the volunteers them self with the aid of a facilitator/ who is camp leader. Activities such as cooking, discussions and how the run should are done by volunteer them self.
Work and Activities :
The main work will be planting trees along the river, creation of tree nurseries and building of bathrooms and pit latrines. Most of these activities will be done by use of hands while working with locally available tools. For easy and efficient performance volunteers and community members will be divided in groups to tackle different duties. The working hours will be in the morning before the day gets hot.
Main Work are:
- tree plantation
- weeding new planted trees
- digging hol for new tree to planted
- fencing the tree nursery club
- creating of new tree seedlings
- building new tree seed beds
- building bathrooms and pit latrines
- preventing soil erosion
Other Social Activities are:
- Afternoon family visits
- School teaching
- Sports and Game with Kid
- Discussions,
- Camp Fire relaxation
- Songs and dances
Volunteers Excursions:
Excursions are not included in the participation fee. For their own interest and from their own pocket, volunteers will organise weekend activities, such as disco party, city & wildlife excursions.
Expected outcome and Benefits for the communities:
- to have a clear understanding of recycled and un-recycled products.
