Luo Culture Tour Kenya

Trip Summary:
TThe Luo community is composed of different clan that speaks one (Dholuo) language. They are located in the neck of Lake Victoria and they are known as river/lake nilot. The famous places in Luo land are: Home of Kenya’s first Vice-president and family of USA first black president Barrack Obama. Learn the lifestyle, customs and traditions, plus tasting some food and try out some of their dances as well as Social relations.

Day 1: “Karibu (Welcome) Kenya"
Pick up:

  • Night in Hotel or day Tour
Day 2 : Lake Nakuru National Park
Park trip orientations, then drive to Lake Nakuru national park, view different species such as black and white rhinos and millions of flamingos. Drive through the Great Rift Valley; stop at Kericho tea plantation for relaxing. Continue with journey up to Kisumu.

Day 3:  Origins of Luo
Visit Kisumu museum, known for the Luo traditions and history about the first railway line in East Africa, Then Kit Mikai giant rocks before arriving to Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga’s Home, Kenya’s first Vice president’s home. At his home, there is a museum and he’s seen as one of the Luo’s legends. Drive to Got Ramogi, the main hill in the area where the Luo people are believed to have originated from. Enjoy an afternoon sunset boat ride in Lake Victoria, at Usenge beach.

Day 4: Marriage customs & dowry
Learn about the customs and traditions of Luo marriage, including the two different payment of a bride price, the first one being known as "acceptation", the second one as dowry payment. For these sessions, you will be taken through by the Luo elders and finish the day around a campfire with food before night in camping.

Day 5:  Traditional music & customs:
Drive to Alego community known as tat yien, in this community learn Luo customs and tat yien traditions. Visit the home of a former great chief called Amoth Kowira, who almost built a school for his many kids only, after countless number of weddings. Entertainment of Luo traditional music: drums, nyatiti and hohangla are some of instruments used by this community. Learn how Luo remove 6 lower teeth as initiation.

Day 6: Building of a homestay & traditional food:
Visit a Luo traditional home: work with community on houses building by use of local materials. Learn about foods which are made during dry season, occasions like ceremonies. You will also be taught on what are known about ceremonies in the Luo culture and will also have a great time visiting the Kenyan home of the new American president, Barrack Obama.

Day 7: Luo health and traditional healthcare.
Be guided by Ajuoga (traditional doctor) through the use of ndagla (juju) and Luo traditional herbs called manyasi that is also recommended in some modern hospitals in rural Kenya. Learn how manyasi is used to cure chira, a disease whose symptoms is similar to that of AIDS.  Drive back to Nairobi; relax in your hotel before going to the famous Carnivore restaurant to enjoy great game meat & entertainment.

Day 8: "Kwaheri" - bye!
You can be transfered to your airport or get a great deal and enjoy relaxing in a beautiful beach.
