Trip Summary
The Luhya people have fascinating culture ad traditions that have been maintained to date; living in the western Kenya the Luhya also has sub ethnic groups which share dialects with similarities and slight differences. Some of the major cultures to be experienced are initiation, bull wrestling sports entertainments of the famous Isikuti dance among others During this 7 days cultural trip you will live in a family within the community and share the culture with the indigenous Luhya people
Day 1: Nairobi – Western Kenya Luhya community
Morning departure from Nairobi driving along the Rift Valley to western Kenya to arrive in the late afternoon in a Luhya village where you will be welcomed with dances and songs, meet your new charming and proud family members. You will have dinner together with your family and night in your own private room.
Day 2: Luhya community orientation
Today after having a typical Luhya breakfast you will have a local guide and walk around the village for orientation of the village set ups, greetings, and major cultural activities that you will expect to have as well as familiarizing with the people around.
Day 3: Experience initiation and other ceremonies
Luhya people have a major initiation of passage into adulthood that take place after every even year, where young men are circumcised openly in front of community members, there are also marriage and birth ceremonies that are accompanied with feasting, songs and dances today you will explore the experiences of luhya various ceremonies.
Day 4: Entertainments and Luhya social life
After breakfast this day you will be entertained with luhya dances of Isikuti, accompanied by playing of drums and metal rods you will also learn how to play the drums to have the beats and also learn the shoulder and waist shaking dance. In the afternoon you will learn about preparation of the local brew called Busaa that is famous with the luhya people
Day 5: Experience and learn about the Luhya food
After having some of the local food this day you will take part in preparation of the favorite foods of the Luhya people such as Ugali (grounded corn meal) and indigenous vegetables.
Day 6: Bull wrestling
Before getting to the climax of bull wrestling, discover how people can get wild as if it is a football game, making noise, doing some witchcraft, acrobatics and all sorts of entertainment. The two bulls, each representing a village, are fed traditional beer before being pitted against each other to battle it out for the pride of the two opposing villages: the winning bull gets a prize and a title.
Day 7: Culture winding – Depart to Nairobi
After morning breakfast drive back to Nairobi to arrive in the evening.
