Mwateti Water Project July Work Camp


Project Theme:
Mountain ecological water installation:

Duration: 21 days, from 10th to 30th July 2010

Project Location :
Voi District,
Coastal Province Kenya.
From Nairobi: 5hrs by bus


Area Attractions:
Tsavo National Park, Sagalla Hill, Coastal Beach

Main Work:
First week: Ecological water installation, setting up water pipes from the top of the hill which is 3kms away from the main tank. These activities will involve working with the community, mostly women and youth groups. Tools will be provided by the local people.
Objectives & impacts: community access Water  

For the next two weeks: Volunteers will be engaged in the construction of a water tank that will be used as a water storage facility. Other activities will deal with setting up Primary School Ecoclubs in 3 different schools with the children. These 2 weeks work will bring together people from 3 different communities to work with international volunteers. Working morale will be brought by singing entertainment from the women.

Objectives of the project:
To show the community that they are responsible development, poverty Redaction and they can use what they have to improve the living standards i.e. “Sustainable independent Development.”

Project description and Brief background :
Mwateti water project a community insisted project situated on the foots of Mbololo hills in Voi division, Taita district in the Republic of Kenya. The project is situated in one of marginalized areas often described as semi-arid zone. These area has bit hit by water shortage problem, thus making women to walk for 10 to 15 kilometers to search for water. The community has come up with a long time approach. These area has been also affected with Human-Wildlife conflicts, making life expectancy quite low. as a example, children report to school late in the morning and leave early in the afternoon because of elephants thus very few hours are utilized in learning at the school. This project is a women empowerment one which will open doors to other development projects in the area such as small farming activities.

Accommodation and Food:
Volunteers will be accommodated in one of the school compounds within community. Volunteers will organized themselves by doing their own cooking and preparing their own activities.

Role of Malaika Ecotourism
Malaika ecotourism coordinates the project by reaching out the volunteers, facilitating orientations, organizing transportations, funding the projects, organizing accommodations, food and other excursions. These are all aimed at easing and improving environmental conservation through local initiatives as one of our aims is the fulfilment of our responsible travel.

The major role of volunteers is to venture and contribute to the local efforts in solidarity with the local people and institution in order to benefit the ecosystem and enrich themselves with new experiences.
