Maxfacta Youth Group Farming Eco Project june Work Camp


Project Theme:
Indigenous Agriculture Restoration

Number of Volunteers needed: 30
Duration: 21 days, from 9th to 29th June 2010

Project Location :
Kangundo District,
Eastern Province Kenya.
From Nairobi: 1:30hrs by bus

Area Attractions:
Visiting Ol’ Donyo Sabuk National Park,
The Kommarock Shrine and Antigravity Hill

Main Work:
First week: Setting up Irrigation farming, grafting, installing water pipes and digging water trails in farm. These activities involve working with the community, mostly women and youth groups. Tools will be provided by the local people.
Objectives & impacts: community economically empowered and Food security  

For the next two weeks: Construction of Food storage facilities (collecting water & sand, building). Volunteers wil work under a professional cosntructor's supervision. The weaving programme will be done with women group and they will also teach volunteers. Volunteers will also engage themselves in activities with the children (games). These activities will bring together people from 3 different communities.
Objectives & impacts: community economically empowered,

Agriculture awareness campaign through dancing, drama, games to be organized by the volunteers
Sports & team building games
Community Visit & cultural exchange
Food security research. (Community questionnaires )

Objectives of the project:
To make the community aware that its people are responsible of their own development and they can use what they have to improve the living standards i.e. “Sustainable independent Development.”

Brief background Maxfacta youth group Camp host:
Maximizing Facts on HIV and AIDS Youth Group is a committed AIDS Support Organization established to make a difference in the health and lives of young people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Maxfacta is composed of 40 members, both young men & women. This group has developed a children home. That’s why they have started this food farming programme. Some food products and profit made from the sale of food products will support this youth group programme of child empowerment. Volunteering in this programme will give hope of life to these children staying in this Maxfacta run children's home. Accommodation and Food:
Volunteers will be accommodated in one of the school compounds within Kangudo community. Volunteers will organized themselves by doing their own cooking and preparing their own activities.

Role of Malaika Ecotourism
Malaika Ecotourism coordinates the project by reaching out the volunteers, facilitating orientations, organizing transportations, funding the projects, organizing accommodations, food and other excursions. These are all aimed at easing and improving environmental conservation through local initiatives as one of our aims is the fulfilment of our responsible travel.

Role of volunteers:
The major role of volunteers is to venture and contribute to the local efforts in solidarity with the local people and institution in order to benefit the ecosystem and enrich themselves with new experiences.
