Project’s Background:
The Taita Tsavo Wildlife and Nature Conservancy project is located in Talio village. The local people have mostly been affected and disturbed by the growing movement of the wildlife. The community youth started the project with the aim of wildlife and human beings to live in harmony and to protect animals in the wildnerness.
The village falls under the Tsavo ecosystem and faces development challenges: the community members living there are mixed farmers-planting crops and keeping animals such as cow goats and sheep. The area is a semi-arid zone where the expected rainfall per year is less than 1000mm.This unreliable and unpredictable weather pattern can not support any meaningful agricultural activities hence struggle for scarce resources is always the order of the day.
Due to this village proximity to the National park, the biggest challenge remains the ever raising cases of Human/Wildlife conflict particularly the community vs the elephants. Cases of crops damaged by marauding elephants are rampant, creating community apathy to wildlife conservation efforts. The youth are particularly affected, due to rising unemployment rate. On education circle, the impact is big as academic standards have declined. Children can not make it to school very early in the morning and have to leave early because of elephants.
Project Nature
An Elephant Dung paper project was launched in conjunction with Kenya Wildlife Service to create harmony between the wildlife and the community through utilization of the Elephants waste into a more productive and viable activities.
The concept of Elephant Dung Paper products will no only help creating revenues but also support conservation efforts by changing community’s attitude towards wildlife, especially elephants.
Out of these efforts, the youth group will attempt to influence the larger community to plant wildlife friendly trees, crops e.g. fruit/oil crops on areas that are prone to this menace. |
