Project’s Background:
The Shimba Hills Forest Guides Association (SHIFOGA) was established in August 2004 by a group of local youths, all of whom had been involved in earlier community initiatives. This was a result of community deforestation within the coastal region. The project's aim was to enhance biodiversity within the coastal part of Kenya and to protect the indigenous species.

Their target is to use their culture which has in some ways recognized the importance of the nature and its biological diversity and understand the need to maintain it.

Initially, the main purpose of SHIFOGA was to provide reliable and well trained tour guides: they could offer their services to visitors to the Shimba hills Ecosystem as well as researchers interested in the rich biodiversity of the area. This would thus benefit the local youth and the community in general.

The group has worked on some diversifications, thus initiating its own nature trail through the forest at the outskirts of the Shimba Hills National Reserve to create awareness about the conservation issues among the community.

Since it was established, the group has received support from various stakeholders, including the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and also the group’s supporters committee.

Volunteer Role:
Volunteers will be working hand in hand with the SHIFOGA community members to protect the rainforest and help the community to interact and protect the nature.
Indeed, there has already been a group of volunteers who has worked in the nature trail paths, created a cultural house center and set up the web page of the youth group.

The following are volunteers' tasks and roles in the project:
  1. Tree planting
  2. Ongoing maintenance of tree nurseries
  3. Management and maintenance of the local sanitation programme (public toilet)
  4. Tour guiding in the Shimba hills National Reserve and the SHIFOGA Forest Nature Trail.
  5. Bee keeping and butterfly farming
  6. Creation and continuity of primary school Eco Club conservation education programs

Volunteer placements are seen as an important part of the group for continued growth. Volunteers bring with them a different outlook and perspective, as well as knowledge base, which is invaluable to the continued learning and education of the group members and the community. They also help to motivate group members for each activity as well as the community as a whole.

Orientation:
You will receive an orientation at the beginning of your programme in Malaika Ecotourism office in Nairobi Kenya and then at the project together with the community. It will cover what you can get involved with at your project, how to stay safe and the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.

Programme support:
Throughout your stay in Kwale, you will have the support and guidance of the Shimba hills forest coordinators. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with anything that you may need. Malaika Ecotourism will also support you with a 24 hour emergency mobile phone number and give you a local sim card line that you can use when you are in the project.

Accommodation & Meals:
Accommodation is provided in a family who are also members of the project, in order to feel integrated and also enjoy more cultural aspects.
