Project’s Background:
Kitale Nature Conservancy Project is a biodiversity conservancy centre which was started 26 years ago, to protect animals & wildlife with difficulties. The aim is also for the local community to understand the importance of the ecosystem in the area. This project gives you the opportunity to care for injured animals and wildlife which are in a need for attention.

The project has 18 staff members and several volunteers, both local and international. The staff members are specialized by areas and both international and local volunteers work along side specific areas with the staffs. This team provides an impetus and care to all efforts focused on the protection, conservation and promotion of the nature.

The project has a well elaborate volunteer work plan which is dedicated to make an impact on the nature. However, the project is open for new ideas that will help both Malaika Ecotourism and Kitale Nature Conservancy to improve and fulfill their obligations / efforts to protect, conserve and promote the nature.

Depending on volunteers' area of interest, this project offers a chance to work in different fields or just get specialized on a particular area.

Volunteer Role:
This project is aimed at helping neglected animals due to the nature of their life and also climate change. The community culture has also contributed highly to the ignorance of these animals. Animals are thus getting care, thanks to the support of the sanctuary and volunteers who have given their time to make an impact on the life of these animals.

The following are volunteers' tasks and roles in the project:
  1. Feed animals
  2. Give animals care
  3. Prepare food
  4. Check animals for injuries
  5. Help tend to wounds
  6. Build new enclosures
  7. Plant veggies for the animals' food

Your work will probably not be limited to these tasks - as a volunteer in Africa you need to be flexible! You may also work alongside local rural communities and children, teaching and assisting with uplifting schemes.

Project activity :
The sanctuary is open 7 days a week from 8am to 6pm for pupils and in this project, there are morning and afternoon activities so volunteers can take the morning or afternoon duties or both according to their preference.

Orientation:
You will receive an orientation at the beginning of your program in Malaika Ecotourism office in Nairobi, Kenya and then at the project together with the community. It will cover what you can get involved with at your project, how to stay safe and the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.

Program support:
Throughout your stay in Kitale, you will have the support and guidance of our native disabled pets sanctuary project coordinators. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with anything that you may need. Malaika Ecotourism will also support you with a 24 hour emergency mobile phone number and give you a local sim card line that you can use when you are in the project.

Accommodation & Meals:
Accommodation is provided in a family who are also members of the project, in order to feel integrated and also enjoy more cultural aspects. Volunteers always have a private bedroom and all meals are provided within the family that is to say breakfast, lunch and dinner. Volunteers are allowed to introduce food from their own culture.
