Samburu National Reserve

Location:
The 844km2 reserve is set in the semi arid land of northern Kenya some km from Nairobi within the vast Samburu district inhabited by the semi nomadic Samburu people of Masai origin.

Vegetation:
Samburu is a semi arid land that receives very little rain annually though the presence of Uaso Nyiro River has created a riverine forest along the river banks most of the park is dominated by acacia and thorny scrubs.

Attractions:
The reserve has several wildlife attractions more so the rare species like Gravy zebras, reticulated giraffes, blue legged grazing Somali ostrich and the long necked gerenuk among other big game such as the Lions, elephants, Leopard and cheetah.
The reserve has also a wide range of bird species such as starlings, weavers, falcons, bee eaters among others.
The Samburu people have rich traditions and cultures most of which they share with the Masai people who are believed to be related to them.

Temperatures: High: 30ºc   Low: 20ºc

Rainfall:
350mm between April and November
Long rains:  Expected in early April to the end of May
Short rains: Expected from mid October to mid December.
Dry from June to early October and from January to March.
