Project’s Background:
The Mwaluganje elephant sanctuary was founded by the community to counter human vs. wildlife conflict between Mwaluganje and Shimba Hills national parks, in coastal part of Kenya. The local people have mostly been affected and disturbed by the growing movement of the wildlife, giving up part of their land in the area to the elephants. Since this project started, it has accommodated up to 300 community members and also attracted about 30 volunteers both local and international. Almost all community members have in some way recognized the importance of nature and its biological diversity has upon them and the need to maintain it.
The main objective is to protect the endangered wildlife between Mwaluganje national park and Shimba Hills national park. The aim is to find a solution to integrate the nature, wildlife and the people.
Populations of Africa's large mammals are in decline. As part of the project work, you will survey and monitor threatened species, such as elephant, buffalo and many sorts of antelopes. You will discover how to interpret wildlife tracks and signs and bring the plight of this region to the attention of the international scientific and conservation community.
Volunteers and the community have been working hand in hand to protect the wildlife and nature in general. They have already achieved positive results in limiting human vs. wildlife conflicts.
