About the Mijikenda
The term Mijikenda means nine ethnic groups or villages the Mijikenda people live along the coastline of Kenya and they are composed of the Kauma, Chonyi, Jibana, Giriama, Kambe, Ribe, Rabai, Duruma and Digo Each of the ethnic group has sacred forest known as Kaya where selected elders would perform prayers and rituals on behalf of the community. The Mijikenda ethnic groups speak different dialects that are closely related to each other with many Kiswahili related words of the present Kenyan national language. They also share a lot of similarities in their cultures and easily understand each other with few differences.
Day 1: Nairobi – South coast
Morning drive from Nairobi to Kwale via Mombasa by public bus to arrive in the Digo community in the evening meet a group of Digo women who will welcome you with Digo dances and songs. You will then join your family in a Digo house for a favorite Digo meal and overnight relaxing.
Day 2: Digo Community Orientation tour
Have a delicious breakfast you will definitely like “Mbaazi and Mahamri” with your Digo family then you will be guided through the Digo community with one of the local guide. This is when you will learn more about greetings and family set ups, social and economic lifestyles of Digo any question you have on what you see with be accurately answered.
Day 3: Digo food and herbs
Participating in preparing the dishes can’t be missed; the Mijikenda people are amongst the best cooks of all the communities of Kenya famous with the Swahili dishes you will learn and help in preparing favorite Digo meals and some of the elderly women will show you some of the important natural herbs used by the Digo people in healing diseases.
Day 4: Spiritual life and Kaya forests
Since Mijikenda people believed that sickness drought and disasters were caused by bad spirits, they have healing songs and sacred forests called Kaya, This day you will experience performance of some of the healing songs and pay visit to the Kaya forests which has since been crowned UN world heritage site, to learn more about their functions and importance in the community.
Day 5: Digo Economic lifestyle and gender roles
Mijikenda just like many other Kenyan community have roles separation and code of conducts among the genders, today you will learn most of this which include how women and men relate their duties and major economic activities like farming, fishing, weaving from coconut palms etc.
Day 6: Entertainments and effects of modernity
Join in the traditional rejoicing dances of the Digo people while you are taken through the eroded traditions and cultures of this mijikenda group with the effects of modernity including the introduction Islam as a religion which today is common among the mijikenda.
Day 7: Departure
Have your last delicious Digo breakfastand say goodbye to your family then depart to Nairobi to arrive in the evening where you will be dropped off at your hotel
