Trip Summary:
The Luo community is composed of different clan that speaks one (Dholuo) language. They are live around the shores of Lake Victoria and they are known as river/lake Nilotes. The Luo people have strong customs and traditions that govern their lifestyle even though some have been eroded by modernity there are still quite a number of interesting cultures you will enjoy in this 7 days trip. It is from the Luo community that the father of the USA president Barack Obama was born.
Day 1: Nairobi – Kisumu – Luo village
Drive to Kisumu and visit Kisumu museum, known for the Luo traditions and history displays you will have an overview of the Luo people including the set up of a traditional Luo homestead then proceed to arrive in a Luo village where you will be welcomed with women ululations relax and have a typical Luo dinner and overnight in your private room.
Day 2: Luo customs
After having a breakfast with calabash of “Nyuka” millet porridge today you will learn more about the Luo customs and taboos and orientation on the composition of the village clans where you will be familiarized with the local people and social life set up.
Day 3: Traditional music & Luo entertainment
This day you will mainly have time to enjoy the art of Luo entertainment by songs the instruments used in various traditional music and dances and have chance to play some of the instruments such as, Orutu, Bul, Asili, Oporo etc in the afternoon you will meet a traditional dancing group to learn some of the moves.
Day 4: Learn to make Luo food
Apart from being good cooks of various fish the Luo have various delicacies derived from vegetables and pants such as pea nuts, cassava, potatoes and their land is also rich in fruits today you will participate in the cooking of some favorite Luo foods
Day 5: Luo family set up and polygamy tradition
Today you will learn more about most of Luo family set ups that are polygamous with more than one wife in a homestead and you will discover how amazing the members of a family relate, you will also explore the culture of wife inheritance and how it has affected the Luo community with the wake of HIV/AIDS
Day 6: Luo herbs and ailments treatment
After breakfast you will be taken through Luo herbs of treating some common diseases and also special diseases that need witch doctor like the common “Chira” which is believed to be caused by defying some taboos
Day 7: "Kwaheri" - bye!
After breakfast drive back to Nairobi to arrive in the evening
