Trip Summary
Kalenjin communities are famous for their Long Distance Athletics Runners also worth to know their rich traditions culture. Get deep and learn rooted traditions, e.g. ways of life, food, religion, cultural heritage and ceremony rituals. Also enjoy a great game drive in Lake Nakuru national park.
Kalenjin community live in the highlands of the rift valley stretching to western Kenya further to the Ugandan border at the foots of Mount Elgon. Kalenjin is formed by other smaller ethnic groups that speak different but related dialects, among these are the Elgeyo, Kipsigis, Nandi, Tugen, Terik, Saboat, Marakwet, Okyek and Pokot
Day 1: Nairobi – Iten
Morning drive from Nairobi across the Rift valley through the tea farms to Iten to arrive in the late afternoon where you will be welcomed to your new family and have a first taste of the Kalenjin meals you will have your own private room for the stay in the family.
Day 2: Community Orientation
After breakfast this day a local community guide will take you through the orientation of the Kalenjin community which includes the relations of the genders greetings, major foods and getting around while you learn about the history and origins of the Kalenjin.
Day 3: Kalenjin initiation ceremonies
Today you will be taken through the initiation stages of the Kalenjin people from youth stage to adulthood and the importance of these initiations such as the tumdo (traditional initiation ceremonies) and Ipinda( joining named age set) you will also learn about the FGM tradition that is widely being campaigned against in this community.
Day 4: Learn to prepare kalenjin food and meet famous athletes
Today you will learn about the favorite foods of the Kalenjing including preparations such as the Mursik, you will then have afternoon home visits to famous athlete champions’ families, learn how they welcome their heroes after they win a race abroad. Sometimes things go wild, as they pour milk on their champion’s body and also make special food in these occasions.
Day 5: Economic and social life of the kalenjin
Kalenjing are mainly farmers keeping cattle and growing crops you will learn more about thetheir agriculture on how they keep and benefit from their cattle and crops including tea farming with Kenya being the third largest producer in the world in the afternoon you will learn how to build a traditional Kipsigis house.
Day 7: Pokot traditional Culture
Meet a Pokot community, learn their traditional therapy and massage and how to treat fractures and other physical injuries traditionally. Learn to make young warriors beautiful hair braids. Role of women and men in the society, a unique one being the young warrior trained at protecting the livestock.
Day 8: Departure
Have your last breakfast of Mursik then depart the Kalenjin community and drive back to Nairobi to arrive in the late afternoon.
